Young People

We have multiple opportunities for young people to support us at MISS, whether through volunteering or choosing MISS for your YPI (Youth and Philanthropy Initiative). We can offer ad-hoc volunteering opportunities during weekends or after school, and we can be flexible to accommodate your needs. Additionally, we are committed to inclusion and believe that everyone has something valuable to contribute.

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI)

The YPI programme empowers secondary school students to champion a charity through research, teamwork, and friendly competition — with the winning team securing a £3,000 grant for their chosen cause.

We’re honoured that students across Aberdeenshire have repeatedly selected MISS as their charity of choice. In 2025 alone, three schools won the £3,000 grant for MISS. This has helped fund:

Garden supplies, plants and equipment for our Forget-me-not memorial Garden at Hazelhead Crematorium

Overnight toiletry items and clothing for hospitals for those who unexpectedly end up in hospital

Supportive books and miscarriage journals for those who have experienced miscarriage

Saltire Awards

The Saltire Awards are a Scottish Government initiative to celebrate, recognise and reward the commitment, contribution and achievements of young volunteers in Scotland.

They give young people the opportunity to volunteer with an organisation which gives them work experience, helps them to learn new skills, and gives them the chance to make a difference in their communities. It is an excellent thing to have on a CV and can help young people gain employment.

At MISS we have had a number of young people volunteering for us, gaining hours towards their Saltire Awards. They work in the MISS Charity Shop in Laurencekirk, assist in making up our memory boxes and support packs, and help with fundraising and events. One volunteer even took the pictures of the memorial garden used on our garden page.
